Count words, characters, sentences, and reading time.

Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time as you type — perfect for essays, meta descriptions, and social media posts with length limits.
Runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
A word counter reports the length of a text in several units at once so you can check it against a limit before you publish. This one updates live as you type and shows six figures: words, characters including spaces, characters excluding spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time. Words are counted by splitting on whitespace, so a hyphenated term counts once and a stray dash counts as a word. Characters are counted as your text is stored, so line breaks are included and an emoji may count as two. A sentence is any run of text ending in a period, exclamation mark, or question mark followed by a space or the end; text with no closing punctuation shows zero sentences. Each line break starts a new paragraph. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, rounds up to whole minutes, and shows at least one minute for any text. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
It's based on an average adult reading speed of about 200 words per minute.
Yes — both totals are shown, which is handy for character-limited fields like meta descriptions and tweets.
A sentence is only counted when a period, exclamation mark, or question mark is followed by a space or the end of the text. Headlines, lists, and notes with no closing punctuation therefore show zero sentences even though the word count is correct.
